You should regularly vacuum your carpet to remove all of the dirt, dust, and allergens from its fibers. Throughout the year, also we suggest either an occasional professional cleaning or a DIY carpet shampoo at home (but always check with the manufacturer's recommendations).
Some carpets have stain resistant treatments that improve your ability to clean stains, but not prevent them.
